Dental Implants versus Dentures: Making an Informed Choice

Dentures are an excellent solution for people who have lost all or some of their teeth. They are custom-made to fit your mouth, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence. However, as time passes, the shape of your mouth can change, which can cause your dentures to become loose or uncomfortable. In such cases, you may need a denture reline. 

A denture reline is a procedure that involves adding new material to the underside of your dentures to improve the fit. There are two types of relines: hard and soft. 

Hard vs Soft Relines 

A hard reline involves applying a new layer of hard acrylic to the underside of your dentures. This can be done in your dentist's office and typically takes a few hours to complete. A soft reline involves applying a soft, pliable material to the underside of your dentures. Soft relines are often recommended for people who have sore spots or sensitive gums. 

Why You Might Need a Denture Reline 

There are several reasons why you may need a denture reline. The most common reason is changes in the shape of your mouth. This can happen due to weight loss, ageing or changes in the bone structure of your jaw. As your mouth changes, your dentures may no longer fit properly, which can cause discomfort, sore spots and difficulty eating or speaking. 

Another reason you may need a denture reline is if your dentures have become damaged or worn over time. This can happen if you have been using your dentures for a long time or if you have accidentally dropped them. If your dentures are damaged, a reline can help restore their shape and improve their fit. 

Signs to Look Out For 

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may need a denture reline: 

• Your dentures feel loose or uncomfortable 
• You have difficulty eating or speaking with your dentures 
• Your dentures cause sore spots or irritation in your mouth

What to Expect from the Process 

To perform a denture reline, your dentist will first take an impression of your mouth. This impression is used to create a mould of your mouth, which is then used to create a new layer of material for your dentures. If you are getting a hard reline, the new layer of acrylic is added directly to the underside of your dentures. If you are getting a soft reline, the soft material is added to the mould before it is placed over your dentures. Your dentist will then adjust the fit of your dentures as necessary and make any other necessary adjustments.
